UMHAN runs the only specialist jobs board for roles in student mental health. As well as advertising roles via our online forum to our 600+ members, we promote the board on our social media platforms, where we have a large and wide-ranging audience.


We advertise jobs in student mental health at all levels. To try and encourage the highest standards of support for both staff and students, certain roles must meet the following criteria:

  • Mental Health Adviser or similar - this person may be working as a sole practitioner or part of a team, will typically carry a caseload of students with long term mental health conditions/deal with day to day mental health crisis and risk/safety issues
    • Person specification must include professional mental health related training or extensive transferable experience in a mental health setting. For sole practitioners, professional training is a requirement.
    • Pay - minimum c.£34,000 per annum or pro rata
  • Specialist Mental Health Mentor - funded by Disabled Students' Allowances or equivalent directly from institution, this role should match the current role descriptor from the Department of Education
    • Person specification must include requirement to meet Department of Education's current Mandatory Qualifications 
    • Pay - minimum c.£34,000 per annum or pro rata; or minimum hourly rate of £35 per hour for Zero hours contract/freelance/self-employed basis
  • Mental Health Team Manager/Wellbeing Service Manager - this role will have responsibility for teams including mental health practitioners and usually for managing crisis, risk/safety and/or safeguarding
    • Person specification must include professional mental health related training
    • Pay - minimum c.£40,000 per annum or pro rata

Our pay scale criteria is based on our extensive knowledge of the requirements of the roles we support. They are also based on a long-term analysis of grading and job roles in the sector, and current NHS pay scales. If your role does not match our pay criteria we strongly suggest it should be regraded. We are happy to supply equivalent job descriptions for these purposes.
